The pay dispute between the Tasmanian Government and state public servants is heating up, with the first in a series of stop work meetings to be held in Hobart this morning.

Unions have been campaigning for pay parity with interstate public servants for 18 months, and late last week the State Government made its latest offer.

But the pay rise deal of between 15 and 25 per cent over four years is viewed by the unions as unacceptable, because it will still leave some public servants short of interstate salaries.

This morning's stop work meeting at Hobart's City Hall is the first of 14 planned around Tasmania this week.

More than 18,000 workers are affected by the pay deal, and the unions have not ruled out taking widespread industrial action in their push for a new offer from the Government.

The Government has urged the unions to keep negotiating to try and resolve the issue.

Tom Lynch from the Community and Public Sector Union says steps have been taken to minimise the impact of today's meeting.

"There will no doubt be some disruptions to the community, we have made arrangements where possible to make sure that skeleton staff remain to provide essential services," he said.

"But if they're non-essential services we have to ask the community to understand that this is the process we are going through."
