A Senate Select Committee on Affordable Housing has heard there needs to be a master plan for land use in Tasmania.

The Committee is meeting in Launceston today to hear about problems facing home buyers in regional areas.

The Senate Committee is in Launceston for its 13th hearing to get a regional perspective on housing affordability.

The Committee Chair, Senator Marise Payne, says she is interested in issues like land supply and state taxes.

"We're looking at state and territory policies and local government policies," she said.

Peter Bushby from the Real Estate Institute of Tasmania, told the committee there needs to be a statewide plan to ensure land is available for housing.

"At the moment we've got individual councils all doing their thing and sometimes you wonder how often they're talking to each other," he said.

The Real Estate Institute has also urged the committee to look at State Government taxes like stamp duty. The committee's due to report in June.
