Queensland business groups say Labour Day has lost its meaning.
Commerce Queensland says union membership has been shrinking across the state over the past 10 years, and is currently at about 19 per cent.
President Beatrice Booth says union-led action puts unfair pressure on Queensland businesses, and today's celebrations do not apply to most workers across the state.
"In Queensland, 97 per cent of your businesses are small to medium and these people are working people also," she said.
"Employers have always embraced their employees in small to medium-sized businesses as part of their families.
"I don't think it's relevant any more."
