OZ Minerals Ltd, the group created by the merger of Oxiana Ltd and Zinifex Ltd, has produced the first nickel concentrate from its Avebury mine in Tasmania.

The company said the operation would ramp-up to full production of 8,500 tonnes of nickel-in-concentrate a year over the next quarter, with the first sales planned for August.

OZ Minerals picked up the Avebury operation after Zinifex acquired Allegiance Mining NL for $852 million this year.

OZ Minerals is the world's second largest zinc producer and has significant exposure to copper, lead, gold, silver and nickel, with four operations in Australia and Asia.
