KUALA TERENGGANU (Malaysia), July 24 Asia Pulse - Herbs and vegetables are quickly replacing flowers in gardens as "edible gardens" are becoming more popular among the people in Terengganu, a state on the eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia, especially those residing in housing estates.
According to the state Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA) Director Hasan Jusoh, although a detailed study had not been conducted on the matter, a random survey on housing areas and schools showed that the edible garden concept was well received by the people of the state.
"In the past, flowers used to decorate gardens and the backyards of houses and schools, but now we can see them being replaced by herbs and vegetables.
"It not only beautifies the landscape of our homes, it can also help us to save on household expenses. If there is a surplus, we can get extra income from selling the produce," he told Bernama when met here Wednesday.
He said the acceptance of the edible garden concept could be seen through the increased number of participants in the state-level 'Kitchen Garden/Edible Landscape Contest' which has been held since 2006.
"This contest, which is organised by FAMA, aims to encourage the society to plant vegetables for their own daily consumption as propagated by Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi himself," he said.
