Three Australian wineries (www.tarrawarra.com.au/,
www.SallysPaddock.com.au, www.pfeifferwines.com.au) have launched a
U.S. website--www.VicWineMates.com--to explain why they're unique. "In
this era of global marketing, we wanted to say 'g'day' to the U.S. in
a very informative and stylish way," explained Simon Napthine (of
TarraWarra Estate), Neill Robb (Sally's Paddock-Redbank Winery) and
Chris Pfeiffer (Pfeiffer Wines). "Victoria is one of the wine world's
secret destinations, and our goal is to introduce ourselves to more
wine lovers," they add.
All three wineries are located in Australia's cooler Victoria
region and each is also a distinct example of a micro-climate within
the region--TarraWarra Estate is in the Yarra Valley; Sally's
Paddock-Redbank Winery in the Pyrenees; Pfeiffer Wines in Rutherglen,
all within several hours' drive from Melbourne.
Winemakers Clare Halloran from TarraWarra Estate, Chris Pfeiffer
from Pfeiffer and Neill Robb from Sally's Paddock-Redbank Winery
travel frequently in the U.S.; the site includes details of their
events and how to meet them.
Why "Vic Wine Mates" as the name of the website? The wineries
explain that 'mate' has come to have a uniquely Australian meaning;
mates help each other and may pool resources or sacrifice personal
gains or glory for each other. Mateship relies on shared principles
and the social mores valuing respect for an individual's right to live
in a decent and honest manner. In the Australian countryside and
especially for farmers, the concept of 'mates' helps people survive
droughts, bushfires and other hardships as you will always be there
for your mates - to lend a helping hand in times of need, and to
celebrate in the good times. Recently farmers in southern Australia of
the country were sending bales of hay free of charge up to those hurt
by the drought. They did this free of charge because "it is what you
do"--you help your mates out.
Mateship is part of the Australian notion of a 'fair go'--the
right or desire for everyone, regardless of social standing, wealth or
country of origin to be able to try to do better for themselves and to
have a voice in the democracy, helped on by their mates. Is it any
wonder then that three Victorian winemakers would join forces to work
together to promote their businesses in the United States?! Why?
Napthine, Robb and Pfeiffer say, "We're mates and enjoy working with
each other."
Each of the wineries has a very distinct and unusual story to
tell. TarraWarra Estate, founded by one of Australia's most
philanthropic families, Marc & Eva Besen, is known for its estate
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and line of Tin Cows varietals, as well as
its contemporary art museum and restaurant on the winery grounds.
Currently available in the U.S. are TarraWarra Estate Chardonnay,
TarraWarra Estate Pinot Noir, TarraWarra Tin Cows Chardonnay,
TarraWarra Tin Cows Pinot Noir and TarraWarra Tin Cows Shiraz. The
winery's home website is www.tarrawarra.com.au/ and more about its
'sub-appellation' can be found at www.wineyarravalley.com/ or
www.yarravalleytourism.asn.au/.
Founder/winemaker Neill Robb has made Sally's Paddock into one of
Australia's most respected single-vineyard Cabernet-based wines,
simultaneously building the line of Hundred Tree Hill varietals from
Redbank Winery. Currently available in the U.S. are Sally's Paddock,
Hundred Tree Hill Chardonnay, Hundred Tree Hill Cabernet Sauvignon and
Hundred Tree Hill Shiraz. The winery's home website is
www.SallysPaddock.com.au and more about its 'sub-appellation' is at
www.pyrenees.org.au.
Founder/winemaker Chris Pfeiffer is known as one of Australia's
expert wine judges and producers of Rutherglen's distinctive fortified
Muscats. An unusual historical bridge spanning Sunday Creek, a
tributary of the Murray River, is one of the attractions in visiting
Pfeiffer. Currently available in the U.S. are Pfeiffer Rutherglen
Muscat, Pfeiffer Three Chimneys Chardonnay/Marsanne, Pfeiffer Three
Chimneys Shiraz, Pfeiffer Three Chimneys Cabernet/Merlot, Pfeiffer
Riesling and Pfeiffer Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery's home website is
www.pfeifferwines.com.au and more about Rutherglen is at
www.rutherglenvic.com/.
Although not all of these three wineries' wines are available in
every state, they can be ordered either from
www.greataustralianwines.com/ or www.cabriniwines.com/.
The wineries are imported into the U.S. by The Wine Angel
(www.wine-angel.com). The website was designed by Julia Belshaw
