Market Overview
Oral Antidiabetic Drugs Displace Conventional Drugs in South Korean Diabetes Therapeutics Markets
The incidence of diabetes is on the rise in South Korea and estimates reveal that South Korea's diabetic population will touch 3.7 million by 2012. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major health problem worldwide with high morbidity and mortality rates, incurring substantial healthcare costs. The prevalence of this disorder is expected to double over the next 25 years globally. In South Korea, volumes on each therapy will grow and type 2 diabetes patients on oral combination therapy and oral monotherapy are expected to increase. The use of insulin will witness a steady decline, due largely to factors such as earlier detection of the disease, better control in the early stages, and the availability of an ever-expanding array of oral antidiabetics, which are preferable options to insulin treatment.
Considering the large number of active domestic participants that manufacture generics in the diabetes therapeutics space, fierce competition between multinational companies and domestic pharmaceutical companies will ensue, changing the market extensively. "New drugs will be continuously developed to meet patient requirements and although the gold standard in diabetes treatment is still the traditional treatment, there is unmet need in terms of long-term efficacy," notes the analyst of this research service. "There is a need to fully evaluate opportunity for target agents and understand evolving market dynamics class-by-class." Participants must assess the latent opportunities in the market and launch strategic planning initiatives to meet market needs.
"Currently, Metformin and Sulfonylurea are the most used oral antidiabetic drugs (OAD) in the treatment of diabetes in South Korea," explains the analyst. "While they will continue to remain the mainstay of treatment, in the future, innovative drugs - mainly DPP-IV and GLP-1 - are expected to partially replace the current Metformin, Sulfonylurea, and TZD markets." Several OADs are in the pipeline, among them DPP-IV inhibitor and GLP-1 offer the greatest potential from both the angles of efficiency and acceptability. A prominent advantage which provides the edge for DPP-IV inhibitors is ease of administration, while GLP-1 promises additional benefits such as weight loss and stronger efficacy in terms of HbA1c reduction.
Government support for diabetes is limited compared to other diseases such as cancer. Estimates reveal that while $120 million is spent on cancer, only $2.5 million is spent on diabetes. More active participation is required on the part of the government to support diabetes prevention and treatment. There is a distinct lack of public education on diabetes and only a few small groups operate at some of the general hospitals. There is a pressing need to spread awareness of the disease, its treatment and management, and lifetime implications. Public campaigns must be undertaken by both the government and pharmaceutical companies to ratchet up awareness levels on the seriousness of diabetes.
