The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and the Vienna State Opera Chorus have arrived in Kaohsiung and are preparing for Wednesday's concert to celebrate the opening of the 2009 World Games main stadium.
Four soloists from four different countries -- Colombian tenor Cesar Gutierrez, American bass-barione Gregg Baker, German soprano Susanne Bernhard, and Taiwanese mezzo-soprano Jo-pei Weng -- will perform with the PSO and Vienna chorus, according to Shih Jhe, director-general of the Kaohsiung City government's Bureau of Cultural Affairs.
The concert marks the first time in 20 years that the PSO, one of the top five orchestras in the United States and comprised of world-renowned conductors and soloists, has performed in Taiwan, Shih said at a news conference Monday.
The PSO will be conducted by Manfred Honeck, the music director of the ensemble, who said the concert will bring together world-class musicians from Australia, Asia, and America.
Wednesday's concert will include Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony to symbolize victory and glory, Honeck said, and will end with Beethoven's Ode to Joy sung by the four soloists and choruses to symbolize peace and unity throughout the world.
Chorus conductor Martin Schebesta also said he felt honored to have been invited and is looking forward to perform at the concert to deliver an important message: we are the world.
Aside from the two ensembles, the main stadium inauguration concert will include a series of performances by 200 vocalists from local choirs in Kaohsiung and Taipei, including the National Experimental Chorus, National Sun Yat-sen University Chorus, and Kaohsiung Medical University Singers, according to Shih.
The concert is expected to draw more than 40,000 spectators and catapult the stadium into the world's spotlight, Shih said.
In preparation for the anticipated large crowds, traffic controls will be imposed around the venue, and no parking lots will be open in areas near the stadium, Shih noted. He encouraged would be concert-goers to use public transportation.
