A concert to celebrate the inauguration of the 2009 World Games main stadium was staged in Kaohsiung Wednesday, with the cannon blasts in Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture in the opening performance accompanied by rounds of fireworks.
The concert featured a series of musical masterpieces, including Ludwig van Beethoven's symphony No. 7, performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus.
The capacity audience of 35,000 was ecstatic as hundreds of vocalists sang Beethoven's Ode to Joy to bring down the curtain.
The classic music gala was attended by a number of incumbent and former high ranking political figures across party lines, including Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu, Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng, former Vice President Annette Lu, former premiers Chang Chun-hsiung, Yu Shyi-kun and Frank Hsieh, former Kaohsiung mayors Yeh Chu-lan and Chen Chi-mai, and Kaohsiung County Magistrate Yang Chiu-hsing.
Wang said the concert also served as a test of whether all the facilities and security, traffic control and evacuation procedures were adequate for the July 16-26 World Games in the city.
According to Mayor Chen Chu, the musical extravaganza was the result of unprecedented cooperation among the two ensembles and Toyo Ito, the world-renowned Japanese architect who designed the stadium.
Chen expressed thanks to Wang for supporting the passage of the budget to build the stadium and to the construction crews on the project for their work. With the concerted efforts of the central and local governments, Kaohsiung's hosting of the World Games will be a success, she added.
