WELLINGTON, June 19 (Reuters) - Australian shares rose 0.8 percent on Friday, with resource stocks gaining on firmer commodity prices and banks benefiting from a rise in their U.S. counterparts.

Positive U.S. economic data data that helped Wall Street rise offered support to the Australian market, which had fallen for four straight days to Thursday on concern it may have got ahead of itself in a recent rebound.

"A small rebound in commodity prices has assisted the miners today, and, following the strong lead from Wall Street, financials are also up," said Simon Bonouvrie, portfolio manager at Platypus Asset Management.

The S&P/ASX 200 index .AXJO was 30.7 points higher at 3,922.8 at 0100 GMT.

New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index .NZ50 was up 0.1 percent at 2,802.0.
