Singapore, June 26, 2009 - (ACN Newswire ) - International membrane technology expert Jim Lozier will address attendees of Singapore International Water Week to discuss "Advances in Seawater Desalination."
An internationally recognized authority on membrane technologies for potable water treatment, desalination and water reuse, Lozier is a Technology Fellow with CH2M HILL, a global full-service engineering, procurement, construction, and operations firm. With more than 26 years of experience, he specializes in the application of membrane processes for water treatment, desalination and water reuse.
Over the past three decades, seawater desalination costs, driven by improvements in technology, have been significantly decreasing. In 1970, energy consumption for reverse osmosis based desalination was greater than 11 kWh/m3. Due to technology advancements, energy consumption was reduced to less than 4 kWh/m3. Significant advancements in desalination technology in the past decade have contributed to additional declines in energyconsumption, with energy optimized systems approaching the 1.5 kWh/m3 level. Advancements have included improved membrane productivity, development of new membrane materials, development of new 'back-washable' membranes for pretreatment, new energy recovery devices, new pumping systems, advancements in pressure vessels, new scale inhibitors, use of alternative energy and use of low-pressure membrane pretreatment.
Lozier will review the key advancements in desalination that have occurred overthe past three decades and the relative improvements in energy consumption resulting from each advancement. His presentation will focus on summarizing the impacts of recent advancements on the design of new and existing desalination facilities.
Lozier will also participate in a poster session, "Sustainable Water and Ecological Resources through Advanced Water Reclamation and Wetlands Treatment-The Oxnard, California Experience."
