Joan Withers is joining the board of state-owned broadcaster TVNZ.

She replaces Phillip Melchior whose term recently expired, TVNZ said.

Ms Withers was appointed to the board of Mighty River Power in August and is on the board of Auckland International Airport. She is a former director of Feltex Carpets.

She has extensive experience in the media industry and resigned as chief executive of publisher Fairfax Media's New Zealand business this year, after almost five years in the job.

Mr Melchior was a journalist with the New Zealand Press Association, TVNZ and Reuters and is currently chairman of the board of Land Search and Rescue Inc.
