Air New Zealand has announced it is buying 14 new Airbus A320 aircraft to replace its current domestic fleet of 15 Boeing 737-300s.

The 14 planes would normally cost more than $US1 billion, but Air New Zealand says it has secured a hefty discount.

The first of the new Airbuses will arrive in January 2011 and the last in 2016. They are bigger than the Boeings they are replacing and are able to carry around 170 passengers instead of 133.

Short haul general manager Bruce Parton says it is a good time to buy planes as the industry is at the bottom of a deep cycle which means demand is limited so conditions are favourable for buyers.

As part of the deal, Air New Zealand has secured purchase rights for another 11 Airbuses some time in the future.
